Shopify vs. the competition

Among websites running a dedicated e-commerce platform we detect, here's how Shopify compares. WooCommerce leads by volume — largely a function of how many WordPress sites exist — but Shopify is the clear #2 platform.

WooCommerce
1,383,173 (87.0%)
Shopify
177,579 (11.2%)
PrestaShop
12,708 (0.8%)
Magento
9,961 (0.6%)
Ecwid
3,297 (0.2%)
BigCommerce
2,144 (0.1%)
Salesforce Commerce Cloud
589 (0.0%)

Excludes general-purpose website builders with optional store add-ons: Wix (707,865 sites) and Squarespace (47,283 sites) were detected far more often overall, but most of those aren't running a store — they aren't counted as ”dedicated” e-commerce platforms here.

Only 0.9% of Shopify stores crack the global top 10,000 — the platform's strength is long-tail, independent brands rather than a handful of mega-stores.

Top domains (TLDs) for Shopify stores

Shopify stores span 459 distinct top-level domains. .com dominates, but country-code TLDs like .uk, .au, .de, and .ca show where Shopify's international footprint is strongest.

Figures are tool detections, not unique stores — a single store can (and often does) run more than one app in a category.

Shopify theme usage

Dawn, Shopify's free default theme introduced with Online Store 2.0, is detected far more than any paid theme — a sign that most stores stay on the default rather than buying a premium theme.

Methodology & data notes

How this data is collected

TechPeeker crawls and fingerprints websites directly, looking for Shopify-specific markers — CDN hostnames, theme asset paths, storefront API calls, and checkout patterns — rather than relying on self-reported survey data. Every number on this page comes from that live dataset of 9,886,188 sites, snapshotted August 29, 2026.

Limitations

Coverage is a large sample of the web, not a full census, so shares should be read as directional rather than exact. App and theme detections rely on visible front-end signatures, so back-office-only tools (with no storefront footprint) aren't captured.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Shopify's usage and market share

How many Shopify stores are there?+

We've detected 177,579 live Shopify storefronts across a crawl of 9,886,188 websites. That's roughly 1.8% of all sites we've crawled, and only covers sites we've actually visited, so the true figure globally is higher.

What is Shopify's market share vs. WooCommerce?+

Among dedicated e-commerce platforms we detect, WooCommerce accounts for about 87.0% and Shopify about 11.2%. WooCommerce's volume is driven largely by how widespread WordPress itself is; Shopify remains the clear #2 dedicated platform, ahead of Magento, PrestaShop, BigCommerce, and Salesforce Commerce Cloud combined.

What's the most popular Shopify app?+

Excluding generic web infrastructure, Klaviyo (email/SMS marketing) is the single most-detected third-party app on Shopify storefronts, followed closely by Judge.me for reviews and Shop Pay for accelerated checkout.

What Shopify theme do most stores use?+

Dawn, Shopify's free default Online Store 2.0 theme, is detected on 24,840 stores in our dataset — several times more than any single paid theme, suggesting most stores never move off the default.

Where does this data come from?+

It's derived from TechPeeker's own crawl and technology-fingerprinting engine, not a survey. See the Methodology section above for details on coverage and limitations.
